What do you aspire to improve that will support balanced literacy in both the math and reading classrooms (or specialized classroom)?

  1. I would like to give students more opportunities to speak with each other and learn through one another. Basically, letting them showcase their knowledge and me stepping back to be the facilitator.

  2. I want to make more connections to other content areas such as math and science. Loved seeing these connected and how we can all work together to help students grow.

  3. I want to continue to Foster discussions about the similarities and how a great deal of what we do in ela can be applied to math as well. If we as adult leaders have this mindset then students will begin to see they go hand in hand as well.

  4. I would also like to provide more connections across content areas. I feel this will really help my students to build on background knowledge and acquire a deeper level of understanding.

  5. I would like to give students more opportunities to write about their learning during our small group time together.
Whether it is writing about their reading, quick writes, or explaining their thinking on a topic. I will be purposely planning these opportunities in my lesson plans each week.

  6. Because oral language plays an important part of the overall literacy progress, I want to engage my students in meaningful conversation to foster their writing development and because reading and writing go hand and hand and writing as a rule lags behind reading progress fostering their writing development will in turn sped up their reading development.

  7. In my classroom I will be purposeful about having authentic conversations, this will give the students a good connection to their writing and therefore making it their own and a more genuine writing piece.

  8. I would like to provide my students with more opportunities to work on their WIGS. I plan to meet with students and discuss their progress with tracking their WIGS. I then can work to provide more targeted activities that can support their WIGS.

  9. I aspire to include more trade books and writing into the math curriculum. The writing will either be a reflection or summary from the lesson and/or problem solving block. In addition, I plan to use more exemplars for justifications and continue to engage students in discourse. By doing so, this will support WIGS as well as increase performance and understanding in the ELA class. Students will also see the importance and connection between ELA and Math. Lastly, I plan to continue to use LEAD and HH times for students to work on WIGS and check in with an accountability partner.

  10. I will also highlight and reinforce those Tier 2 and Tier 3 verbs that students will see on the STAAR. If they know and understand these words, then they will be more successful with answering the questions or completing the task correctly.

  12. I would like to spend more time developing my students ability to justify their thinking on paper in math. Their reading responses are strong, so it’s important that they are allowed the time to practice critically writing their math reasoning.
