4Dx Pages 65 - 76 Reflection 1:

Pages 65 - 67 generate a sense of excitement and competition about the purpose and importance of creating a compelling scoreboard.  After rereading these pages, how would you respond to the following quote from page 66: "If the lead and lag measures are not captured on a visual scoreboard and updated regularly, they will disappear into the distraction of the whirlwind."?

  1. To me, it is like the saying "Out of mind, out of sight." The goal and progress must be visible and in the face in order for us to keep the main thing the main thing. If not, we will lose focus. In addition, I believe in being transparency. I can't and won't improve if I don't know and admit that I need to do so.

    1. I love that you incorporate the idea that not updating it could mean that we aren't admitting to ourselves that we're not improving. That's always a very difficult thing for some people, and I've never really thought about our scoreboards holding us accountable to admitting when we need help or redirection.

  2. Just this past week I've seen more of a competitive edge in my students because each one of them sees that others are improving. Much as Felicia said, having a public display can be scary because it sometimes shows that we aren't growing, but it's a great reminder that we can ask for help or try things a different way when they aren't working. And who doesn't love public affirmation when it IS working?! By displaying our lead and lag measures, we create a natural environment of accountability so that things don't get lost in our every day world.

    1. Public displays require us to confidently take risks, and they also push us to be bold and do whatever it takes to meet these goals.

  4. I feel that keeping "score" not only motivates and allows for self reflection but it also brings teams/classes/students together (collective efficacy) to support and hold each other accountable. I love the quote at the bottom of pg 66. " A compelling scoreboard tells the team where they are and where they should be, information essential to team problem solving and decision making. It helps drive our work and why we do what we do each day for students.

  5. In my opinion, it then becomes "wallpaper." The kiddos need to see that it matters. Whether it is a conversation about it in the hall as a class, touring the campus to see other grade level's scoreboards, or individually moving or adding your growth. They need to see it and feel it.

  6. I think this quote is saying that if we make the scoreboards important to us, then the students will have buy in. If we don't keep the scoreboards updated and talk about their importance, then they lose effectiveness. I like how the book says, "Great teams know at every moment whether or not they are winning. They must know, otherwise, they don't know what they have to do to win the game."

    1. I found the checklist at the end of the chapter helpful when evaluating scoreboards to see if in 5 seconds or less you can tell if you are winning. If you can clearly see if you are winning, that "game on" switch is set.

  7. Yes, I agree! The scoreboards are something that needs to be seen as a priority. When teachers show scoreboards being important. In return students make it a priority get excited too. Otherwise, it will get caught up in the whirlwind and no one will really even care about it.

  8. The quote says to me that if the scoreboard is not compelling and displays all the pertinent lag and lead measures then the excitement about what you are trying to meet is not there. Hence, you and your team will not have the drive and commitment to keep it updated. It will just be another sheet on the wall. The whirlwind is more pertinent and important at that point. However, if the lag and lead measures are displayed and the team understands what they are working towards then the excitement begins to flourish. Once the this starts, the team will be eager to keep the board updated and continue the game even when dealing with the whirlwind.

  9. We play differently when we are keeping score! The students are so motivated by the scoreboards and need to see their hard work pay off. If scoreboards aren't updated and talked about regularly, they will become just another thing on the wall.

    2. I agree. The kids get motivated by seeing their growth by moving the marker on the scoreboard. However, as time moves forward they may forget the importance of powering through to meet their next goal! Reminders and discussions on the “why this is important” become necessary.

  10. I agree with the quote! It's got to be visible and updated regularly. Every morning when I ask the kiddos to mark their attendance scoreboard I also ask them to reflect on their PIG and scoreboard that we set in the first grading period. I'll often tell them, "I didn't do very good on mine this week, but guess what, it's a new week!" OR...I rocked it this week, how about you. Tap in with your partner and check on them and their PIG.
    We also try to do this during leadership block with our WIGS..making meaning of scoreboards and not just a sheet of paper.

  11. If scoreboards are engaging and given value by the user then they are an important tool to help the user get to their goal. Having a visual of where we are going is sometimes just as important as a visual of where we came from. Make it engaging, give it value, get to the next step.

  12. I completely agree with the quote! It is important that our students take ownership in the scoreboards so that they do not feel like it is just a "thing" that the teacher's update and keep up with. It has to be engaging to them and easy to understand so that they are able to keep score of keeping their goals.

  13. It's important that the students be involved in updating the scoreboard regularly so that they see can see their own growth. "A great team can't function without a scorebaord that compels action. Without it, energy dissipates, intensity lags..." So students should be involved in the updates and the updates should be happening frequently to make them valid.

  14. I totally agree with this quote because of personal experience. I have found that if I write something down I am more likely to remember it and follow through, also when I look back and see realized WOW I accomplished that task it motivates me to keep going and setting other goals.
